O Meu Pobre Joelho

Finally got the results of my MRI from the doctor and I’m negative for any torn ligaments.  However, I do have a swollen bursa (a fat pad in the knee), which is what is causing the pain.   Doctor’s orders are for 6 weeks of physical therapy and keep icing the knee.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to have this settled.  Now that I know the extent of my injury I’m eager to get the rehab phase started and get back on the mats.  I haven’t trained in 4 weeks and it’s killing me.  However, Jiu-Jitsu isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon so I’m in no hurry.

I met with the physical therapist and I will be doing two rounds of therapy a week focusing on the strength in my knee and flexibility.  I also have stretches I have to do at home along with the aforementioned ice.  Not bad at all and it could have been a lot worse.

So I’m going to apologize for the lack of jiu-jitsu posts for the next few weeks, but I hope to keep you interested with my physical therapy stories.

So I spoke to my doctor and we agreed to go with an MRI and physical therapy.

He thinks the MRI will show that my ligaments are fine and that I just need to work through the remnants of a bad sprain. That’s why he also ordered the PT so that I can get that going right after the results of the MRI.

The more I think about it and the more discussions I’ve had with other jiu-jiteiros I think he’s right. The MRI will give me piece of mind at least.

Will keep you guys updated on my progress. Hope your training has been going well. Are ya’ll looking forward to the Pierre vs. Shields fight on the 30th?

I definitely am. I don’t think Shields has a chance. Pierre, just like Anderson Silva, is head and shoulders above everyone else. Let me know if you agree.

No training update to provide.  I haven’t training in two weeks, which sucks big time.  I’ve watched two classes just to absorb things by osmosis.  I don’t like it.

I find myself feeling frustrated about not training.  The only good part is I get to hang out with the guys, but that’s it.

The knee still isn’t 100%, which scares me a bit.  I am  going to make an appointment with my doctor to schedule an MRI.  I think I just need some more time and the MRI won’t show any soft-tissue damage, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some piece of mind.
