Cansado, mas Sinto Bem

July 30, 2011

How are  you doing?  I’m tired, but feeling good.  Partly because I found out that if I pass my next PT evaluation I’ll be discharged and can resume my regular training schedule!  Yea!!!  Wish me luck!  I’m also feeling good partly because we had a great class today.  It’s really hot up in here in NJ so the training was that much tougher, but in a good way.

We went right into ground work today.  No stand up techniques, which was unusual, but whatever.  We worked on applying the omoplata from the guard and then the defense against that omoplata.  I didn’t have any real trouble with either.  It was just more about getting the time right to apply one or the other.  For example, if you catch the omoplata early enough you simply thrust your hips forward and go for a basic under-the-leg guard pass.  If you’re late, then you let your attacker get into position, tuck the arm he is attacking against your belt and then roll under him as he lifts his hips to apply the technique.  Quite effective.

Although these techniques sound easy and for the most part they aren’t too difficult, our instructor really wanted to hammer the lesson in so we worked on these techniques over and over and over again.  In a room with no air conditioning that can be quite taxing on the body.

After class was over I partnered up with a new blue belt (I forgot his name, which isn’t good) and we went for one, six-minute round.  I didn’t get him, but I did control him for the most part in side mount after passing his guard.  He got me back into his guard after bucking like a madman, but I just passed it again.  I’m glad that those basic techniques weren’t loss due to inactivity as I was away from the mat.

I didn’t tap him, but I’m OK with that because I think I did well overall.  Wish me luck on my evaluation.  Will post results on Tuesday.

No real update today. Left knee is great and will be discharged from PT on Tuesday if my evaluation goes well. Don’t see why it won’t.

PT will start on the right knee on Thursday, which will be good. Trying to schedule the MIR, which will probably happen next Saturday. Wish me luck!

Finally got the results of my MRI from the doctor and I’m negative for any torn ligaments.  However, I do have a swollen bursa (a fat pad in the knee), which is what is causing the pain.   Doctor’s orders are for 6 weeks of physical therapy and keep icing the knee.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to have this settled.  Now that I know the extent of my injury I’m eager to get the rehab phase started and get back on the mats.  I haven’t trained in 4 weeks and it’s killing me.  However, Jiu-Jitsu isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon so I’m in no hurry.

I met with the physical therapist and I will be doing two rounds of therapy a week focusing on the strength in my knee and flexibility.  I also have stretches I have to do at home along with the aforementioned ice.  Not bad at all and it could have been a lot worse.

So I’m going to apologize for the lack of jiu-jitsu posts for the next few weeks, but I hope to keep you interested with my physical therapy stories.

Wish me luck!

So I spoke to my doctor and we agreed to go with an MRI and physical therapy.

He thinks the MRI will show that my ligaments are fine and that I just need to work through the remnants of a bad sprain. That’s why he also ordered the PT so that I can get that going right after the results of the MRI.

The more I think about it and the more discussions I’ve had with other jiu-jiteiros I think he’s right. The MRI will give me piece of mind at least.

Will keep you guys updated on my progress. Hope your training has been going well. Are ya’ll looking forward to the Pierre vs. Shields fight on the 30th?

I definitely am. I don’t think Shields has a chance. Pierre, just like Anderson Silva, is head and shoulders above everyone else. Let me know if you agree.
